Myco leather, also known as mylo, mycelium leather or mushroom leather, is a type of leather-like material that is made from the root structure of mushrooms, called mycelium. “Shroom Skin” or “Fungi Hide” (not the dolphin god rest him) is an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to animal leather and synthetic materials, as it is produced using renewable resources and does not require the use of harmful chemicals which is pretty sweet.
Queue Rachel from F.R.I.E.N.D.S for this bit, I’m going straight science here. To make myco leather, mycelium is grown on a substrate which is the surface or material on or from which an organism lives, grows, or obtains its nourishment, such as sawdust, agricultural waste, or even old clothes which is mad. The mycelium fibers form a dense mat, which can then be harvested, cleaned, and processed into a range of different materials, including sheets, tiles, and even three-dimensional structures.
Myco leather is biodegradable, which means that it can be easily disposed of without harming the environment. It also is a mighty result for the poor animals and hopefully wayyyy more so in the future when this becomes more prevalent. On top of these more obvious benefits it is also lighter, stronger, and more flexible than animal leather, and it can be customized to achieve different textures, colors, and patterns, are you kidding me.
Myco leather is still a relatively new and niche material, and its production and processing methods are still being refined and improved. However, large brands are starting to run through their collections like the classic Stan Smith shoe by Adidas above. MycoWorks, creators of Mycelium leather received $17 Mill for the demand in their mycelium based fabrics for the luxury fashion market, hmmmaaad!!
If you don’t know this lad above, Paul Stamets is his name and he is the Mushroom King, Fantastic Fungi on Netflix go watch it, fascinating!! All in all it will b cool to see where it goes, be sick one day to make a one of a kind Reunion Shroom Onesie out of Shrooms, sll that sh*t for 1 million euros 🙂
